Comoros

Comoros is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa, situated between northern Madagascar and northeastern Mozambique. With a population of approximately 882,847 (2025), a life expectancy of 67 years (2024), and a GDP per capita of around US$2,055.80 (2025), the country faces ongoing socioeconomic and governance challenges. The CIVICUS Monitor rated Comoros’ civic space as “Obstructed” in 2025, citing restrictions on political participation, media freedom, and civil society activities. Key concerns include the continued non-ratification of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the detention of opposition figures, arrests of journalists, restrictions on critics and human rights defenders, and the use of an internet shutdown during post-election protests in 2024.
